LONDON (CBS) When Prince Harry visits New York this weekend to play in a charity polo match, he will be doing so as an eligible bachelor. The British royal recently split with his longtime on-again, off-again girlfriend Chelsy Davy.

The prince has been facing the sad news of this recent breakup for the past month and had hoped that Davy would have a change of heart, a source told me, but not even a recent trip away together could hide the fact that the two were heading in different directions.

So, what makes someone part ways with a prince?

For Davy, it had a lot to do with work. A source revealed that she told the prince six weeks ago that she planned to relocate back to Africa, where she grew up, so she can pursue a career as a lawyer.

Davy told Harry that she couldn't practice in the UK because she "will always be Prince Harry's girlfriend" and she wanted "to be known for [her] own merit."

Having a career, she said, is "something I worked for and I am having it at any cost."

Harry, on the other hand, "always respects that his role within the royal family must come first," according to a palace insider, and while he may have told friends he would love to live abroad with Davy, it was "nothing more than a pipe dream."

According to sources, the two plan to remain friends.
