Amy Winehouse's Drug and Alcohol Addiction: Timeline
Amy Winehouse tragically passed away at the age of 27 Saturday, and though there's been no confirmation, people are already speculating that her death was due to drugs and alcohol. And, given Amy's troubled past, the rumors might very well be true.
Here's a look at the singer's struggle with addiction:
Amy's problems with drugs and alcohol have been talked about widely ever since she stepped into the spotlight. Starting in 2005, she went through a period of rapid weight loss, heavy drug use, and violent mood swings. In 2006, she reportedly turned things around for a while, but turned back to addiction later in that year after the passing of her grandmother.
In 2007, she canceled many of her US and European tour dates due to her ill health, and during that time she was allegedly hospitalized for a heroin, ecstasy, cocaine, ketamine and alcohol overdose. "I really thought that it was over for me then," she reporteldy said at the time.
The rest of 2007 she continued to struggle with addiction, and her father even moved in with her and her label annouced they planned to stop promoting her in the US unless she turned herself around. In early 2008, she went to rehab for two weeks.
In 2008, the singer continued to run into trouble and bounced in and out of the spotlight, and rehab. It's unclear how many times she actually sought treatment during this period.
Throughout 2009, Amy had reportedly backed off the drugs, but apparently her drinking had gotten out of control. However, pictures of her from the summer of 2009 show that she'd gained some weight and her complexion improved.
For most of 2010 Amy stayed out of the spotlight and it appeared that she'd cleaned up her act, though in May 2011 she returned to rehab -- for a week. And, a performance in Serbia, which was supposed to kick off her European tour, was disastrous and led people to believe that she was not really sober. From there, her tour was canceled.
The singer was sadly found dead July 23, 2011 at about 4pm by the Metropolitan Police in London.

He left behind his wife Courtney Love, and their daughter Francis Bean. Two decades before that, on July 3, 1971, doors frontman Jim Morrison was found dead by his girlfriend in the bathtub in Paris at the age of 27. The woman, Pamela Courson, died of a heroin overdose at 27 three years later. Although an autopsy was never performed on Morrison, many believe drugs led to his death. The list keeps going: Janis Joplin's life was taken by heroin on Oct. 4, 1970 while Jimi Hendrix's died on Sept. 18, 1970. It is believed that the famed guitarist overdosed on sleeping pills, perhaps accidentally.
