Fitness fanatic Jake Gyllenhaal is taking a breather.

In the September problem of Information , the 31- year -old actor says his notoriously grueling workout routines are a point of the past. "I haven't cycled in a lengthy time," he reveals. "I do not run any longer. Do I consider care of my physique and take conditioning significantly ? Yes. But exercising routinely doesn't match the vitality of the character I am enjoying now," he says of An Enemy, in which he plays a man who seeks out his look -alike.

Gyllenhaal -- whose well-known exes involve Reese Witherspoon, 36, Kirsten Dunst, 30, and Taylor Swift, 22 -- says he's become a distinct guy since he shot the police thriller Finish of Observe , directed by David Ayer. "Dave told me right off that this was going to impact my soul," Gyllenhaal explains. "' Friends are going to say, Which is the Jake I've always known, but somewhere deep inside, you will know otherwise.'"

The actor spent 5 months prepping for the 22-day shoot, which incorporated " 3 nights a week in ride-alongs with cops," Gyllenhaal recalls. "[We had] fight coaching each morning at a Kenbo Karate dojo, and I received the sh-t kicked out of me. " There's a simulated fire in the film, but Dave desired us to feel what which is like, so he had us do a managed burn," Gyllenhaal adds. One particular Saturday, the actor and his costar, Michael Pena, 36, "drove down to Orange County, dressed like firemen head-to-toe, and all of a sudden we're there just sitting in the middle of a burning constructing."

According to Gyllenhaal, the film -- in theaters September 28 -- inspired him to go with his gut.

" Each journey begins with fear. And I could say which is what I want to embrace now. A actual expertise," he tells Facts . "And I want, total, to believe in what I know is appropriate. There have been a lot of instances when I haven't. It really is what I am asking myself: Wherever is the line? What is the line? There's so much context, it can be almost impossible to come across."
